You guys probably already know all this, but I have just discovered it after a LOT of
research.
Below is a copy of an e-mail I have sent reagarding the "Firewire standard":
It seems "Firewire" and "1394" compliant don't really mean much, at least not yet.
I have just
purchased a new VST "1394 compliant" hard drive and am trying to make it run on my
"1394 compliant" Adaptec "Firewire" card (which came with my Pinnacle Systems
DV300 Firewire video system,) and, well, it won't work. And, according to Adaptec, it
isn't going to work. So, am I missing something in the whole "1394 compliant" thing?
According to VST, (after considerable digging), their "Firewire" "1304 compliant"
drives will only work on Apple's "Firewire" "1394 compliant" PCI boards or on the
blue and white "Firewire" "1394 compliant" ports. (They never answered my e-mails.)
Adaptec, after three tries, e-mailed, that indeed my VST "Firewire" "1394 compliant"
hardrive will not work on their "Firewire" "1394 compliant" PCI board and that they
don't have any plans at present to make anything work but cameras.
I must be really dumb to believe that this was a standard. (I have been involved in
computers a long time and I guess I was just so excited about "Firewire" that I let myself
get taken in.)
