Don't bother! I never use this feature.
: i have to save it as a gif file which is a lot bigger and of poorer quality than the jpg version of the same file! is there a way to save as jpg files and still make only the sprites show thru without the opaque composition space? btw, most of my backgrounds are tiled images.

No! JPG format does not support transparency. This is not an Image Composer shortcoming the format itself does not support transparency. Fortunately Image Composer has a great feature called custom palette. Which will resolve your quality issue, your file size issue and give you the transparency your after.
