Yikes.
I'm really sorry to hear that you're having serious problems with the Image Composer and GIF Animator betas.
Thomas, I just checked the public image composer discussion newsgroup, and I didn't see your posting there -- I assume either I'm going blind or it's lost somewhere in Internet land. At any rate, I'm going to ask someone from my group to follow up with you to understand the problem you're having and to work through them.
With that said, let's turn to the $64,000 question. Yes, there are people from the Image Composer group who read this bulletin board -- sometimes. We were blown away when this first materialized; it was another lesson for us as to how devoted the Altamira Composer users are. Obviously we're delighted, and we want to do what we can to support this kind of thing, because it's good for everyone.
We also monitor closely the newsgroup microsoft.public.imagecomposer.discussion on the Internet news server msnews.microsoft.com; this newsgroup is open to everyone on the Net for posting and reading. We're certainly not trying to compete with this bulletin board, but we're trying to focus our resources on the activities where we can add the most value for the most customers in the end. It's hard for us to be everywhere on the Net at once, and to simultaneously get Image Composer out the door. (not to mention seeing our families once in a while :-)
Our first priority is to listen and to collect up bug reports and suggestions from everywhere we can find them, so that we can get the bugs fixed and the product shipped, and to do so on time. As is always the case, the Internet has maxed out our team's bandwidth and it's all we can do to try to keep up with the sheer volume of feedback we get. Our second priority is to follow up with FAQs and other general information that help the most people at once. (we're working on a FAQ, and you'll be seeing it shortly; I'll make sure it gets posted here, too) Our third priority is to try to follow up with beta customers with serious problems, and to help them get solutions.
But let me be clear: what you download from our Web site is a beta. Despite our best efforts, it is bound to have some bugs, and for that reason we strongly recommend that you do NOT use it for your mission-critical work.
We do public betas for two reasons: 1) to get a lot of real-world feedback; and 2) to give you an opportunity to try the product and decide whether you like it and find it valuable enough to purchase the final, supported version. (by the way, FrontPage with Bonus Pack should be available on retail shelves this week)
We appreciate your feedback and suggestions; we take them all very seriously and we do the best we can to address them. We don't try to provide individual support for the beta, and we make that clear when you download it. If you really, truly need support, you should buy the final, supported version.
We DO try to provide useful information and to host forums for discussion of Image Composer, includign the beta. We are also doing some other things to try to build the community of interest around Image Composer, and in particular to make sure that there is an ever-growing set of people who are willing and able to participate in open forums and answer questions. Obviously we could be doing more in this area, and I appreciate your patience while we have been getting the product out the door and jumpstarting these efforts.
As I said before, I am constantly amazed by the loyalty and devotion that the Altamira Composer customers have to the product. I belive that you are incredibly valuable customers, and I hope you believe me when I say that I want to do what I can to make sure that we take care of you.
So... yes, we're out here, and paying attention. I apologize for not usually having time to respond -- it makes me wish that I had another 20 hours in a day to keep up with all of this.
Regards,
Kevin Schofield
