Don't dismiss Quark.
The problem you are experiencing is unique to say the least.
I've work on both Pagemaker and Quark for more than 10 years now.
Although Pagemaker may get you buy for now.
Quark is far more suitable for reproduction.
Pagemaker doesn't even address some prepress issues like trapping wel enough to consider the 2 programs equal. I think if the problem you are having with Quark is ironed out you will end up enjoying it much more than Pagemaker.
