: I will soon graduate with a B.F.A. from UT Austin and I am considering a career in graphics art. I would appreciate any tips from experienced graphic artists regarding requisite preparation for this field as well as job outlook, stability, and earnings potential in graphic art. Additionally, any advice for getting into this line of work would be greatly appreciated.

Learn as much as possible about the print or web or multimedia production process as you can. The role of a designer whether wanted or not as become much more technical. And a lack of this knowledge will make it difficult to compete. It is not a only a matter of creativity anymore technical learning curves are expense for employers. If you can locate a 4 to 6 color commercial printer
in your area and ask them to take you on a tour of their production process. Ask as many questions as possible about your role in the process and where they can educate you to avoid mistakes. You may think that they will not have the time or want to do this for you and if you ask for the wrong person this may happen. Ask for a sales representative and work with him. If he is smart he will
realize that before long you will become a buying customer and you will reward his efforts with jobs to quote. (If he is not to smart you may want to tell him this directly) If you plan on doing any web design do the same thing with a local ISP. You have leverage you will be a buyer someday and as long as you return the favor by allowing them to quote jobs for you in the future. if you follow
through than the next designer who does this will be received with open arms. Always remember the KARMA thing. I promise if you do this you will be miles ahead of other graduates I have hired for a long time.
We publish interactive CDROMs which will educate you on the printing process and how to properly create files for film imaging. If you will email me your snail mail location I will send you a FREE demo.
