I am reasonably computer literate...but I woke up to find myself the new editor/publisher of a technical magazine that has been paying a fortune for printing a somewhat unprofessional appearing magazine. I have just done my first edition which I sent to the printer in PM5 with Corel5 illustrations. Before I start the next issue I have questions. 1. IS Photoshop a better idea? 2. Can I save money on the color photos by scanning myself rather than having the printer do color separations and stripping? Can I do color separations on the computer and send the printer a file? 3. Is there some way to keep the PageMake file from getting so large (like perhaps not embedding the photos and line art) if so...how do I do it? 4. Does anyone have some idea on really upping quality and adding more color without paying a fortune for color separations, stripping etc.? We only print 2000 copies and the $$$$ is killing. 5. Anybody recommend how to present the mag to a printer in such a way as to maximize appearance and quality and cut costs? I feel really dumb and unprepared. I'm hoping there are some patient people out there who can make some recommendations and teach me. The former editor/publisher used cut and paste to send the printer camera ready and the printer did all the photo scanning etc. Printing cost have run as high as $20,000 for four issues a year that way. Please educate. Thanks in advance for any help.
