: I am new to DTP. My new job basically includes coming up with marketing strategies AND implementing them by means of brochures, newsletters and marketing packages.
: Although I find my work challenging and satisfying (hey I've only been working here for three months!), I have been a little nervous about the printing aspect. My boss asked ME which would be more cost-effective--in house printing or commercial. I found this site by chance and felt reassured by Bruce Little's response to "breakin' into the business." For my company's needs at this time, in-house printing is the best way to go.
: I, too, have an Epson 3000 and it works beautifully. However, it is so slow! It literally takes all day to print 30 one-page color newsletters, not to mention it's probably hard on the printer. I have been putting feelers out for a laser printer and I hear the Tektronics Phaser 740 is great. Anyone have any experience with the Phaser series printers?
: Thanks for your input!

I use to do this type work (for 5 years). As a general rule, I sent all my print work out to be printed. As you already found out, its takes way too long to print your production on any desktop printer, not to mention the consumables you'll be using along with deadlines. I started by comparing prices with the local printers in my area. When I found one or two that I liked, I gave them a few small jobs to see some results (quality, did they produce what they promised, did they complete the job when they said they would?). Then when I found one I really liked, I talked to the rep and worked a "deal" that if I gave them ALL of my print work what kind of, if any, price break and "perks" would they give me? After I established a relationship with the company I chose, it was always an easy job to get mass amounts of printing done...and ON TIME!
