Question about scanner resolution

Everything Iv'e read suggests a formula of 1.5-2X the line screen or lpi. of the output device for scan resolution. Well I have a Canon 610 that I use for small projects but the only reference in the manual to lpi. says the unit prints at 6 lpi. Obviously a scan resolution of 12 will not be any good. Canon tech support was useless. The maximum dpi. output of the printer is 720x720. Can anyone help?
