I think that besides just sitting down and "doing" by giving yourself homework assignments--mock newsletters, flyers, ads, etc.--what Laura says: "#3 - Collect items you see that you like and don't like. Make a list of why you like or dislike each piece work...and what ruins its effect?" is just about the best thing you can do. Too many people don't realize how verbalizing likes/dislikes or why something works or doesn't can work for you. It's almost magical how it works and can step up your learning speed in a big way.
