Hi Martin! Welcome to DTP! In my humble opinion, the author to begin with is Roger C. Parker - two of his books are particularly great for starters:
"Looking Good in Print" and "The Makeover Book". Have you looked at Microsoft Publisher as a home DTP package? True, it is an entry-level package, but
I find it easy to use and almost as flexible as one's imagination. Hope this helps!
