Having a computer doesn't automatically put one in the field of DTP! Many people would rather pay someone else to do layout and worry about printers, scanners, etc. than do it themselves. I have found it beneficial when trying to get more clients to do some free work for them. This is a good way to show people what you can do for them. This might mean taking a flier that you found and redoing it, coming up with a creative solution to a small problem that you know about, etc. Also, don't forget about about the World Wide Web when thinking about DTP. Creative thinking and self-confidence are two valuable tools!
