: Besides a decent printer, what equipment should I purchace(Presently a new system is out of the question. New one to be purchaced in Jan. 1999).

: Which software packages are easiest for a beginner to begin learning? I am taking a course in DTP in college, but none of the software is available to us.

: Suzanne - Make sure your desktop box has enough RAM to run the software you buy, and don't chintz on the printer. If you get a scanner, that should also be the best you can afford (if you plan to do Webs). The printer and scanner are going to last you two to three years! You might consider upgrading your desktop to a PCI with Pentium, the prices are fairly low now.

: For software, there is no easy route. Buy what the pros use, and take the time to learn it. Start with one app, such as PhotoShop, and set yourself a project with it. Learn by bumbling around trying to get the result you want. Then re-do the project, and try to do it better and faster. DO NOT FEAR SOFTWARE! The learning curve is only a measure of the many, many little things you need to absorb, not a measure of the brain power you need be born with.

: I do small market stuff, tabloids and brochures, etc. and prefer PageMaker (5.0a is fine). PhotoShop is a standard for the industry, (although I generally make my imagery by hand and scan it in for Webs).

: For a great start in Webs, study from the Yale C/AIM Style Guide - search info.med.yale.edu/caim

: Most designers who have wax on thier hands will lament endlessly about how important it is to study DESIGN and TYPOGRAPHY. DTP automates mistakes just as easily as good design. Don't just learn to use the software - someone may see your work!
