Check with the adult vo-tech schools in your area. I was able to take classes in Quark, Photoshop and Illustrator for about $30 a class. You'd find these types of courses an excellent beginning in understanding desktop publishing. Also, the advice from Lisa is excellent. You'll need a portfolio of printed pieces before you'll be able to obtain work. Good luck!
