Hi...I'm a self-taught desk-top publisher. I've been asking myself the same question. I started on Pagemaker, so of course I feel the most comfortable with it. I like Quark though, sometimes I think the graphics capabilities are a little easier to use. For documents containing a lot of text though, I would definitely choose Pagemaker. Dealing with text blocks in Quark is clunky to me. I also like that in PM, I can click my insertion point anywhere I want and start typing. (In Quark, you must draw a box.) I have trouble with that sometimes because it's quirky-- if you don't draw a large enough box to begin with-- text will "drop off" out of your box and then you can't seem to get it back even if you pull your box out larger??? For large scans, I like Quark because it won't allow you to place it out of proportion. Yet, to me, Pagemaker can do all that Quark can do, but with less steps involved.
Anyway...for those projects where you have no decent artwork, I like Coreldraw. It has a lot of textures and backgrounds that can sometimes "make due" if you have no photographs to use.
My service bureau prefers Quark all the way around since I am unfortunate enough to be using a PC. (It converts to MAC.)
Anyway, hope this helps.
Anyone know if there are backgrounds with Quark? I can't find any.
