As Michael says, you can have the person working in CorelDRAW! export their work in .AI format instead of saving out in .CDR format. I believe they use the .AI3 format for document transfer. As Michael notes, not all features used in either program will be supported by that older format.
If you're dealing with clipart in .CDR format, then there are two options: one is to use CorelDRAW! yourself to open the file and save it in .AI3 format, and the other is to use FreeHand for Windows, version 5.0 or better, to open the file. You can then save it in a variety of .AI formats. (FH5/Win saves out to .AI5 or earlier formats; FH7/Win saves out to .AI6 and earlier formats.)
(If you're only on the Mac, then I don't know, sorry... CorelDRAW! for PowerMacs is supposed to open PC .CDR files, but customer comment in MacWEEK is that the file read may have problems.)
