Hi Nick,
Saw your post on desktoppublishing.com. I'm new to AI and work in w/Win95, but here's what I do.
1. file > place: place the image on a separate layer
2. choose layer options for the image layer (the arrow option on the palette)> Options for layer....
3. check option box for "Dim Images" and "lock"
4. trace away.
