I have just noticed a "feature" of Illustrator 7 that's a bit of a nuisance: it automatically substitutes characters from the Symbol font for symbol characters (ie degree symbol). I noticed this after seeing empty space for symbol characters (which is the correct width for the font's symbol character) when the Symbol font was not open. This is not desirable, especially when using a fancy or italic font where the design of the symbol character is obviously very different.
I haven't noticed this until now because
1) I normally have Symbol font open for Acrobat Reader, and
2) I don't use symbol characters a lot.
I'm thinking there is a table of which fonts can have Symbol font characters substituted because it doesn't happen with other symbol fonts like Carta and Zapf Dingbats. I seem to recall seeing somewhere mention of this "feature" but I'm at a loss.
Previous versions of Illustrator don't do this. Also, when the Symbol font is not open and I print, the Symbol font character is still substituted, I assume because the Symbol font is built in to the printer.
Any ideas?
