I just solved this one recently. Go back and get your Illustrator 6.0 Pantone library. Pull out the various Pantone swatch libraries from their folder (I can't remember the name right now - probably "Swatch Libraries") and put in the 6.0 library. Restart Illustrator and you now have short Pantone names.
