my type feature wont work at all!

Whenever I load up Illustrator 7.0 on my PC, the character box is blank in all all feilds, except the font size box....that reads "0.1" All other features work fine. Only the type feature is broken. I even reinstalled the program, and it still does it. All this started after I added some new fonts to my system. Somebody help me out, I am dying here. :(
