Fading images in Illustrator 7.0

I have to fade 2 images, so that the first goes over in the second, with photoshop this is no problem, but i wanted to do it in illustrator as the images are too big to save into the file. Is there a possibility to apply a transparency layer or something similar? I tried blending but it doesnt work.
