I'm not sure what type of images you are working with but if they are native illustrator files you can do a faked transparency using the soft mix filter. You could also open the objects in Photoshop and adjust the opacity. Otherwise, you will need a plugin called "Hot Door Transparency" to change the opacity directly in illustrator.
