Cloning

Can anyone help me with the straight cloner? I have no trouble cloning from the original image into a cloned image, but when the source and destination are the same image (for instance, when I try to clone from a point in the image to a couple inches over in the same image), I can't seem to get it to work. What I seem to be doing is just cloning from one point right back on itself. It could possibly be my pc since I sometimes get a bunch of stray cursors hanging around after. Any suggestions?
