Simulating glaze?

I'm trying to adapt a traditional oil-painting technique to Painter 5.0. It involves painting your figure (or whatever) in grey tones, and coloring it with a "glaze" (paint mixed with a medium to make it transparent).

However, I can't figure out how to simulate the glaze. Painting with a very low opacity doesn't work -- it obscures the gray underpainting, and blends with it, becoming very muddy and ugly.

Any ideas?
