ASCII vs. Binary

We are receiving conflicting info/suggestions on ASCII and Binary. Currently, we have some images that when saved as ASCII, they print incorrectly / produce postscript errors. We normally suggest saving in Binary. This is because ASCII writes larger files and Binary has more characters than ASCII, wich is limited to 126 characters, etc. Photoshop support has suggested to use ASCII encoding when saving, for stability, but can not provide any paperwork/back up the claim. What is everyone else using? ASCII or Binary? Have you tested the other? Do you have experience/info you could share on problems with either/both formats? This problem is occuring on both Mac and PC platforms. It's greatly appreciated.
