Awful kerning in Photoshop 5.0

Has anyone noticed how the latest version of Photoshop does an awful job with the automatic kerning (tracking)???!!! Does anyone know about a fix or QUICK/EASY workaround for this? (Manually kerning the offending letter groups isn't much help, as it ruins other letter groups in the text and takes as long as setting type in version 4!)
