To create the effect they used on the VH1 website simply open the file you wish to change
and open a new alpha channel. Open a new document at the same resolution as the other
picture. Make the new document about 5x5 pixels or larger and zoom in to about 500%.
Select black as the foreground color and with the pencil tool draw a line of pixels that extends
the width of the pict. Select the marque tool and select an area that extends to the length of the
black line and one row of white pixels below it.
With that selection active go to Edit > Define Pattern. With that done go to the original document
and the alpha channel. Select the entire image by pressing Command+ "A" (select all).
Then choose Edit > Fill and choose "Pattern" from the pulldown menu in the box that appears.
Deselect by pressing Command+ "D" (select none) and go to the RGB channels in the channels
window. Command+click the alpha channel with the lines and use that selection to delete,
darken or any other effect you can think of.
