Effects in Photoshop 4.0

I just got Photshop 4.0 and whenever I try to add special effects such as gaussian blur nothing happens. I have to switch into quick-mask mode and perform effects. The only color in quick-mask is pink. How do I change the colors in quick-mask mode? or How do I perform effects in regular mode?
