In Reply to: What filter will give a "mountainous" or "sandstone" effect? posted by Steve Ladd on February 06, 1998 at 09:57:34:
: I'm creating a simulation of Earth from outer space. It involves painting land surfaces with colors matching those from satellite photographs. But I need to add texture where there's mountains. What filter will do that for me?
Probably the best Photoshop filter for creating a three dimensional effect would be the Render > Lighting Effects filter. If you create a channel that represents the height of the mountains, you can use it as a texture map in the lighting effects filter. You can see something I've done like this at my site. The URL is http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Cavern/7864 The background for the banner on my title page uses this effect. Also, some of the images in my art gallery do too.
