Adobe PageMaker 6.5 - continued

"The inclusion of the new Frames utility takes PageMaker into a territory once dominated by QuarkXPress."

frames

By using frames one can create highly-structured files with both text and graphics. Frames also allow the choice of designing circular or polygonal text rather than having to use workarounds as in Version 6.0. The Frames options allow one to choose either of the three graphics tools - Rectangle, Oval or Polygon. Any graphics object can be turned into a frame. This release does not have a Frame palette - hopefully Version 7.0 will - and has certain key features unnecessarily buried several keystrokes away.

auto adjust

"The Auto readjustment feature allows an existing document's content to be resized to a new page size."

Included are preset page sizes that can be used including standard Macintosh and Windows display sizes; custom page sizes are also possible. For designers who need to set up publications for different page sizes or distribution on the Internet this feature is very welcome.

With this release PageMaker 6.5 further pushes itself as the market leader with the combination of Frames, Layer controls and Web integration. The new interface, once mastered, will allow Adobe products users to feel increasingly comfortable and benefit from the overall consistency that it offers. Improved HTML, hyperlinks and PDF export options offer greater document control and allow the transition, especially to the Internet, of greater possibilities. With the release of the Version 7.0 next year, PageMaker, unless challenged, will continue to lead the way for both the novices and professionals.
